OUR HERITAGE

About hotel grandeur

hotel grandeur was founded on a simple premise: that travel should feel restorative, personal, and connected to its surroundings. What began as a modest family-run guesthouse — a handful of rooms above a bustling village kitchen — has, over the years, grown into a boutique destination with a character entirely its own. Yet the spirit of those early days remains unchanged. We still greet every guest by name, still source our ingredients from the same local farms and producers we have worked with for decades, and still believe that true hospitality is measured not in stars or ratings, but in the small, quiet moments of care that define a stay: the remembered preference, the unhurried conversation, the table kept warm for a late arrival.

Combining contemporary architectural sensibility with warm hospitality, our boutique destination invites guests to pause, enjoy remarkable dining, and experience comfort in its purest form. Every corner of the property has been thoughtfully considered — from the natural materials that ground our interiors and the soft, layered lighting that shifts with the time of day, to the hand-selected furnishings and locally crafted textiles that give each room its own distinct character. We believe that good design should never announce itself loudly. Instead, it should quietly support the rhythm of your day, whether you are lingering over a long breakfast, reading in the afternoon light, or retiring after an evening spent at our restaurant. Nothing is accidental here, and nothing is overdone; the goal is a sense of ease that you feel before you can explain it.

At the heart of hotel grandeur is our kitchen. Our culinary team works in close dialogue with the seasons, building menus around what the land offers at its very best and letting the calendar, rather than convention, set the pace. We favour honest, unfussy cooking — dishes that celebrate the integrity of their ingredients and the traditions they come from, reimagined with a contemporary hand and a deep respect for technique. Produce arrives from nearby farms and growers we know personally; fish is chosen with the same care as our wine; and our bread, preserves, and stocks are made in-house, slowly, because some things simply cannot be rushed. Paired with a carefully curated selection of regional wines and warm, attentive service, every meal is designed to be an experience worth savouring, not simply a stop along the way.

Beyond the table, we offer our guests a place to slow down and reconnect — with the landscape, with their companions, and with themselves. Our grounds, our shared spaces, and our team are all here in service of that simple goal. Mornings begin gently, with coffee poured at your own pace and the day's first light across the terrace; afternoons invite a walk, a swim, a book left unfinished on purpose; evenings gather everyone back around the table. Whether you arrive for a single night or stay a while longer, we hope you leave feeling rested, nourished, and a little more at home in the world.

We are proud of where we come from and grateful for the community that has shaped us — the growers, makers, neighbours, and regulars whose trust has carried us from one generation to the next. Many of our team have been with us for years, some for decades, and their knowledge of the house and the region is part of what makes a stay here feel less like a transaction and more like a welcome. As we look to the future, our commitment remains the same as it was on the first day: to offer genuine warmth, thoughtful comfort, and a sense of place that stays with you long after you have gone.

How to Make a Hotel Stay Feel More Relaxing

By the hotel grandeur Team · 6 min read

The most restful hotel stays rarely happen by accident. They are the result of small decisions — made by the guest, by the house, or quietly by both — that together turn a room into a place you can truly settle into. None of them are complicated. Most take less than a minute. And yet, taken together, they are the difference between a night away and a genuine pause.

It begins with arrival. Unpack before you do anything else — even partially. A bag left open on a luggage rack keeps you, psychologically, in transit. Hanging a jacket, setting a book on the bedside table, and placing your toiletries in the bathroom are small acts of claiming the space, and the mind follows the body's lead.

Light matters more than most guests expect. Resist the urge to turn on every lamp at once. Instead, find the one warm light that suits the hour, and let the room stay a little dim. Softness is not the absence of light but its restraint.

Then there is the question of the phone. We are not suggesting a digital detox — only a short reprieve. Twenty minutes without it, on arrival, is enough to notice the room: the texture of the linen, the sound of the evening outside, the particular quiet of a place that is not your home.

Finally, eat slowly and sleep early. A long dinner, a glass of something good, and an unhurried return to the room is, in our experience, the most reliable ritual there is. The bed will be turned down. The curtains will be drawn. And the morning, when it comes, will feel like it belongs to you.

These are not rules. They are simply the habits we have noticed, over the years, among the guests who seem most at ease when they leave. Take what serves you. Leave the rest. The room, after all, is yours.

JOURNAL · THE KITCHEN

A Season at the Table: Cooking with the Market

By the hotel grandeur Kitchen · 7 min read

Every menu in our restaurant begins in the same place: a walk through the market, early in the morning, before the day has fully decided what it will be. What we cook is not planned months in advance and then defended against the seasons. It is the opposite. The season speaks first, and the kitchen answers.

This is not a romantic posture. It is a practical one. Produce at its peak needs very little done to it — a little salt, a little heat, a good oil, perhaps a squeeze of something sharp. The work is in the choosing, and in the restraint. A tomato in August is a different ingredient from a tomato in January, and pretending otherwise is how kitchens end up cooking the same food all year round.

Our growers know what we are looking for, and they tell us what is good before we ask. When the first asparagus arrives, we build a dish around it that same week. When the soft fruit peaks, the dessert menu changes almost daily. When a crop fails — and some do — we do not substitute something flown in from elsewhere. We cook something else.

The same logic runs through the rest of the kitchen. Fish is chosen by what the boats have brought in, not by what a menu printed last month promised. Our bread is baked in-house each morning, our stocks are made slowly from trim and bone, and our preserves are put up in the height of each season so that a little of it can return in the depths of winter.

There is a quiet discipline to cooking this way. It requires flexibility, close relationships, and a willingness to be led by things outside your control. But it also produces food that tastes like where it comes from and when it was made — food with a memory, and a sense of place.

Guests often ask what they should order. Our answer is always the same: ask what came in this morning. The kitchen will tell you honestly, and the answer will be the best thing on the menu that day.

JOURNAL · THE REGION

Three Walks Worth Taking Nearby

By the hotel grandeur Team · 5 min read

One of the quiet pleasures of staying with us is how quickly the landscape opens up. Within a few minutes of the front door, the streets give way to fields, footpaths, and long views — and within an hour, you can be somewhere that feels genuinely far from everything. These are three walks we return to often, and recommend to guests who want to see the region on foot.

The first is the shortest and the easiest: a loop through the meadows behind the house, following the old stone wall for about forty minutes. It is gentle enough for a morning before breakfast, and in early summer the wildflowers along the path are worth the walk on their own. Go slowly. This is not a walk for distance, but for noticing.

The second is a longer circuit — roughly two hours at an easy pace — that climbs gently to a ridge with views across the valley. The path passes a small chapel and a working farm, and there is a bench at the top that seems to have been placed there for exactly this purpose. Take water, take your time, and go in the late afternoon if you can; the light is extraordinary.

The third is for the more ambitious: a half-day route that follows the river downstream, crosses at an old bridge, and returns through woodland. It is not difficult, but it is long, and it rewards an early start. Pack something to eat and stop halfway, ideally somewhere with a view of the water. The route is marked, but we are always happy to draw it out for you before you go.

Whichever you choose, the advice is the same: leave the headphones, bring a layer for the wind, and let the walk take longer than you planned. The point is not to cover ground. It is to move at the pace the landscape sets.

Maps and route notes are available at reception, and our team can arrange a packed lunch for any of the longer walks with a little notice.

JOURNAL · SLOW LIVING

The Ritual of a Slow Morning

By the hotel grandeur Team · 5 min read

Breakfast is the most underrated meal of a hotel stay. It is also, we think, the most revealing. A rushed breakfast — eaten standing, or skipped entirely, or taken with one eye on a screen — sets a tone for the day that is hard to recover from. A slow one changes everything.

The ritual begins before the food. Open the curtains fully, rather than just enough to see by. Let the morning in. If there is a window that opens, open it, even for a few minutes. The air at that hour is different from the air later in the day, and the room notices.

Then: coffee, properly made, and drunk while it is still hot. This sounds obvious, but most coffee is drunk while it is going cold, because it was made to be taken away rather than sat with. Sit with yours. Let it be the first thing you do rather than the thing you do while doing something else.

What you eat matters less than how you eat it. A long breakfast of simple things — good bread, butter, fruit, an egg cooked the way you like it — will always beat a hurried one of many things. The kitchen is here to make whatever suits your morning, and we would rather you took your time than took it all.

Finally, resist the urge to plan the day before it has begun. Give yourself twenty minutes without an agenda. Read a page of something. Look out of the window. Let the morning be slow enough that the rest of the day feels like it has room in it.

The slow morning is not a luxury. It is a habit, and like any habit, it becomes easier with practice. Start with one, and see how the day goes.

JOURNAL · THE CELLAR

A Short Guide to Regional Wine

By the hotel grandeur Sommelier · 8 min read

Our wine list is short by design. We would rather know a small number of bottles deeply than offer a long list we cannot speak to with conviction. Almost everything on it comes from within a few hours of the house, made by people we have met and whose vineyards we have walked.

The region is not the most famous in the world, and that is part of its charm. The producers here tend to be small, often family-run, and quietly devoted to their land. Many farm organically or biodynamically, not as a marketing decision but because it is how they were taught. The wines that result are honest, often modest in price, and full of character.

If you are new to the region, start with something white and local — something crisp and mineral, made to be drunk young and with food. Ask for whatever is open by the glass. It will almost always be the best value on the list, and it will tell you more about where you are than any description could.

For reds, look for the smaller appellations and the older vines. The wines tend to be medium-bodied and food-friendly, with a savoury character that pairs beautifully with the cooking from our kitchen. They are not wines to be saved for a special occasion; they are wines to be opened on a Tuesday, with dinner, because that is what they were made for.

And if you find something you love, tell us. We keep a note of what guests have enjoyed, and we are always happy to recommend a bottle to take home — or to arrange for one to be sent on. Many of our favourite discoveries have come from guests pointing at something on the list and asking what it is.

The best way to learn about wine is to drink it slowly, in good company, and to ask questions. Our team is always happy to answer them. There is no wrong order, and no question too simple.

JOURNAL · DESIGN

Design Notes: The Materials of the House

By the hotel grandeur Design Team · 6 min read

When we began the most recent restoration of the house, we made one decision that shaped everything that followed: we would work with a very small palette of materials. Stone, timber, linen, wool, and a handful of metals. Nothing shiny. Nothing that announced itself. The aim was not a style, but a feeling — the sense of being somewhere calm, grounded, and quietly well made.

Stone came first. It is in the floors of the entrance hall, the bathrooms, and the thresholds between rooms. We chose it for its weight and its coolness underfoot, and because it ages well: every scuff and mark becomes part of its character rather than something to be hidden. It is, in a sense, the material that holds the house together.

Timber came next — oak, mostly, left unfinished or lightly oiled so that it darkens slowly with use. It appears in the furniture, the window frames, and the stair. We like that it can be repaired rather than replaced, and that it carries the memory of the hands that have touched it. A good piece of timber, cared for, will outlast all of us.

The soft materials — linen, wool, cotton — were chosen for how they feel rather than how they look. Linen that softens with every wash, wool that holds warmth without weight, cotton that breathes. These are the materials you notice last and appreciate most, because they are the ones your skin remembers.

Everything else was kept deliberately quiet. The lighting is warm and layered rather than bright. The hardware is simple, often hand-finished. There is very little pattern, and almost no colour that is not drawn from the landscape outside. The result is a set of rooms that feel less decorated than composed — spaces that support the life happening within them rather than competing with it.

Good design, we believe, is not something you notice immediately. It is something you feel, gradually, as the day goes on. If a guest leaves and cannot quite say what made the room so restful, we consider that a success.
